Badia Nuova
The Church of Saint Francis of Paola, also known as the Badia Nuova, is a monumental complex of great charm located in the heart of Alcamo. Attached to the Benedictine monastery, the church is a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque architecture and houses artworks of inestimable value.

History and Architects
Founded in 1531 by Father Filippo Scamacca, the church stands on a site formerly occupied by an ancient Benedictine monastery. The present building, the result of a renovation completed in 1699 to designs by Giovanni Biagio Amico, is distinguished by its restrained exterior elegance, which contrasts with the rich Baroque decoration inside.
The interior, consisting of a single nave with a barrel vault, is adorned with four side altars and an exquisite stucco decoration. Among its most prized features are the eight white stucco statues made by Giacomo Serpotta in 1724, depicting religious virtues and saints.

Artworks
In addition to Serpottaβs statues, the church preserves several noteworthy works of art, including:
The canvas of the Assumption of the Virgin by Gaspare Serenario (16th century)
The canvas of Saint Francis of Paola Receiving the Stigmata by Mattia Ricci (17th century)
The wooden statue of Saint Francis of Paola by Vincenzo Gagini (16th century)

The Benedictine Monastery
Next to the church stands the Benedictine monastery, founded a few decades after the church, between 1563 and 1567. Suppressed in 1866, the monastery was reopened and restored during the course of the 20th century.
