Chiesa dei Santi Cosma e Damiano

The Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian, located in the historic centre of Alcamo, is a true gem of Sicilian Baroque architecture. Originally built around 1500, it took on its present appearance between 1721 and 1725 thanks to a radical renovation designed by the architect Giuseppe Mariani.

History and Architects

From the outside, the church is distinguished by its convex façade, richly decorated with sculptural elements and crowned by an elegant bell tower. Inside, visitors are enveloped in an atmosphere of sumptuous beauty, with its octagonal plan and walls adorned with gilded stuccoes and finely executed frescoes.

Among the artworks housed within, particular attention is drawn to the two allegorical statues of Charity and Justice, created by the celebrated sculptor Giacomo Serpotta. The church also contains several canvases of considerable artistic value

Beyond its artistic merits, the Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian plays an important role in the religious life of the Alcamo community. Attached to the Monastery of Saint Clare, it is today served by the Poor Clares, whose chants and prayers help create an atmosphere of mystical devotion.
