History
A Dive into the Past:
Originally called Piazza Maggiore, the square boasts a millennia-old history that reaches back to the Arab period. Over the centuries it underwent various transformations, taking on its current layout in the 17th century with the arrival of the Jesuits. Its present name, in honour of the celebrated local poet Ciullo d’Alcamo, dates from 1875.
An Architectural Gem:
The splendid Church of the Gesù is a Baroque masterpiece that dominates the square with its imposing façade and its slender spire-topped bell tower.
An Open-Air Stage:
Piazza Ciullo is the focal point of city life. Here you’ll find everything from concerts and theatrical performances to food festivals and folkloric events. The square truly comes alive on warm summer evenings, when café tables spill out onto the pavement, creating a lively, convivial atmosphere.
