Porta Palermo is one of Alcamo’s most iconic symbols and the main entrance to the historic centre of the town.

History

Built in the 19th century, this gate marked a key passage point during the medieval era, when Alcamo was surrounded by walls. Even today, standing before it, one can imagine the hustle and bustle of that time, with merchants, soldiers, and pilgrims coming and going.

Take a close look at the structure:

  • The bronze reliefs: on either side of the gate you will notice two bas-reliefs by the sculptor Nicola Rubino. The first depicts the coronation of the poet Ciullo d’Alcamo at the court of Frederick II, while the second celebrates the typical working activities of the town.

The inscriptions: on the keystone of the main arch, an inscription records the year the gate was built, while another, placed above the smaller arch, commemorates the restorations carried out during the 20th century.
